Design deemed crucial to success of technology product
Background
ZiNIR Ltd is a technology start-up that has developed a unique, hand-held ‘point, click and read’ chemical analyser for use by non-specialists, particularly in the security, environmental and engineering sectors.
The challenge
The ZiNIR directors recognised that the design of their product – in particular its ease of use by non-specialists in a range of adverse conditions – would be absolutely crucial to its success.
The response
Through the Designing Demand Generate programme the directors have received support and advice that has shown them how to cost-effectively integrate design principles into their broader innovation activity.
The outcome
As a result of the design project, ZiNIR has been able to get access to potential customers to market test the analyser as well as to end users who have been enthusiastic about the external design. In addition, the designs have led to a patent application and two UK design rights have already been granted. In the meantime, by applying the knowledge and using the template provided under the Generate programme, ZiNIR has developed a design brief for a stand-alone light source.
