The Economist Innovation Awards

The future of design
As the UK Government assesses the value of design and technology on the national curriculum, the D&T Association has launched a campaign to promote the importance of design and technology in education. A recent awareness raising event, “Is Creative Britain in Reverse?” launched a video featuring leading designers including Sir Paul Smith and Sir James Dyson. James Dyson Award
Key to inspiring and encouraging the next generation of designers, the James Dyson award is open to product and industrial design and engineering students and challenges students to develop problem-solving inventions. Spread across 18 different countries, the overall international winner receives £10, 000 to develop their design. Made By Britain
As part of the “Made by Britain” project custard creams and toilet rolls have been selected by MPs to represent the best of local design and manufacturing. MPs were asked to “hunt for tales of manufacturing ingenuity and innovation”. The project aims to build a more positive picture of Britain’s inventiveness and manufacturing industry. MP’s nominations will be shown on an online map with the view to expand this to an exhibition to coincide with next years Olympics. Full story at http://tinyurl.com/64aokju
Forget inkjet think chocolate!
A prototype for a 3D printer that uses chocolate instead of ink or plastic has been created by University of Exeter researchers. The printing starts with a flat cross-section image and the 3D shapes are then created by printing the chocolate layer by layer. Eat your heart out Willy Wonka!
