Design Council goes independent

The Cabinet Office has announced that the Design Council will cease to be a Non Departmental Public Body (NDPB) but will retain its charitable status and be an independent not-for-profit organisation incorporated by Royal Charter. It will work closely with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to place design at the heart of society and the economy.

Learn from the best in digital

Get up-to-date with all the latest digital developments on Tuesday 16 November. This event looks at the most awarded and surprising interactive work and shows you how to apply it yourself. Speaker Dave Birss has been a lead digital creative at Ogilvy, Poke and MRM. He now runs digital consultancy Additive.

Getting Linkedin

Beginners Linkedin is a workshop for people who have joined Linkedin but know nothing about it or for those who are registered and have hardly started using it. Presenter Will Kintish will help you to understand its functions and how it can improve your networking, as well as offering advice on building a profile. The event is being run by British Design Innovation and takes place at Just IT, London, from 9.30am – 12.30pm on Thursday 25 November. The cost is £99 for BDI members or £157 for non-members. A 3 for 2 offer is also available.

Innovation Awarded

The prestigious Media Guardian Innovation Awards (MEGAS) for digital communications and technology innovations are now open for entries. All projects entered must have appeared for the first time between 29 September 2009 and 3 December 2010. Submission deadline is Thursday 3December.

The Megas include rewards for innovative digital communication across different industry sectors. Work entered can include social media, mobile and any digital platform.

Other rewards include innovative uses of technology and the Megas judges would particularly like to see entries from independent developers.

Further categories include ‘Digital Entrepreneur’ and ‘Innovator of the Year’.

New BDI Chairman

The Alloy’s Gus Desbarats has been elected as the new chairman of British Design Innovation. Gus is an RCA-educated automotive designer with degrees in mechanical engineering and systems engineering.

He said, “BDI is the voice of UK-owned design businesses with track records in delivering strategic innovation propositions, including the ability to assess business problems, create design briefs, deliver world-class design interventions and oversee the implementation of those interventions. Getting this across to stakeholders at every level is crucial for the UK’s industrial health and economic success.”

Regeneration in a frugal economy

South Coast Design Forum (SCDF) director Peter Murray FRSA, is the keynote speaker at a joint event between SCDF and the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce (RSA) at the University of Chichester on Thursday 18 November.

Peter’s talk, ‘Regeneration in a frugal economy – communities take control’ will be of particular interest to regeneration consultants, local politicians, local government officers, architects, planners, community leaders and designers.
