London 2012 Games – Torch design
The Olympic and Paralympic Games wouldn’t be complete without their flame. Now the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) needs a team of designers, engineers and manufacturers to create the torches that will be held by thousands of Torchbearers in the two Torch Relays that will the lead the UK into the start of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Under review
The future role and status of the Design Council as the national strategic design body is under review led by Martin Temple, Chairman of the 600 group. His recommendations will be reported to Ministers in September. No formal public consultation will take place but there will be an opportunity to feed into the review. The Next 200 years
Empac, the European metal packaging association is offering a prize of €10,000 to engineering and metallurgy students for a new innovation to further reduce the carbon footprint of metal cans and benefit consumers and manufacturers. The prize celebrates the 200th anniversary of the metal can as a food container. Deadline is 5th November 2010, email empac@citysavvy.com for details.
Spending cut

Meeting the challenge

€200 million eco-innovation projects fund
Nearly €200 million is available to fund Eco-innovation projects in Europe between 2008 and 2013. The call for proposals for 2010 is now open, with priority given to SMEs. Clusters of applicants and projects demonstrating a European added value which also have a high potential for market replication are strongly encouraged. Priority will be given to building and construction products and related processes; food & drink sector packaging, products, methods and materials; greening business, smart purchasing and materials recycling.
